Beneath the Surface is a museum project that begins with a shared characteristic between human memory and geological strata: both are materialized through the accumulation of time. Like the excavation and exposure of layers buried beneath the ground, the architecture reveals memories embedded within individuals and the city but often left unrecognized. Rather than acting as a passive backdrop, the strata become active structures shaped by temporal pressure, rupture, and overlap, directly generating architectural space.

Visitors move through uneven layers and fragmented spatial sequences that heighten their awareness of the body and perception. Vertical drill voids penetrate multiple strata, functioning either as circulation paths or open spaces that connect different temporal depths. Visitors also become “citizen archivists,” contributing their own records rather than remaining passive viewers, allowing new memories to accumulate continuously within the museum. The project therefore presents memory not as a fixed narrative, but as a collective process that expands across space and time.
