Windflow Data Center transforms the aging Paldang Dam into a new form of circular urban infrastructure by integrating a large-scale data center above the existing structure rather than demolishing it. As increasing data processing creates greater demand for cooling energy, the project uses the dam’s microclimate—including river-generated wind and temperature shifts during gate operation—as part of a passive cooling system.
Three pyramid-shaped data center volumes are supported by a triangular truss system above the dam. River air enters the double-layered space between the inner and outer envelopes to cool the servers, while the waste heat they generate is redistributed to nearby communities. By reassembling two contrasting infrastructures into a unified environmental system, the project proposes a future urban model that reduces demolition waste and cooling-energy consumption.
