Gateway Museum begins at the moment when land in Yongsan—separated from Seoul’s natural urban flow for nearly a century by military occupation—is returned to the public and transformed into Yongsan Park. The project proposes a cultural gateway that bridges the approximately 30-meter (98-foot) elevation difference between Haebangchon and the newly opened park, restoring the topographic and pedestrian continuity that had long been interrupted.

Located near the National Museum of Korea, the museum provides new exhibition and storage space for a substantial collection of donated artworks that existing facilities cannot fully accommodate. Permanent and temporary galleries present these works alongside documents, photographs, maps, and other records of the former military garrison, while locally rooted programs incorporate the everyday life and memories of Haebangchon residents. On land newly returned to the public, the museum brings hidden collections and overlooked histories back into contemporary civic life, creating a cultural space that connects the city and the park, as well as the past and the present.
